The technique is known as “Grisaille” technique, because the paint in “Grisaille (monochrome painting by black and white or gray)” is used in the under-painting before glazing layers of color over it. Also, some artist use “Camaïeu” technique as under-painting before glazing, which employs two or three tints of a single color, other than gray, to create a monochromatic image. I use “Grisaille” technique, but I use burnt umber instead of black for my under-painting before glazing. Note: "Grisaille" was originally used with black tempera by Flemish painters as an under-painting. Good example of technique with "Grisaille" is "Portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and his Wife” by Jan Van Eyck. “Adoration of the Magi” by Leonardo da Vinci is a good example of “Camaïeu”. |
