“Grisaille Technique" in my Paintings

I use an old glazing technique that was used by Flemish old masters. The technique is known as “Grisaille” technique, because the paint in “Grisaille (monochrome painting by black and white or gray)” is used in the under-painting before glazing layers of color over it. Also, some artist use “Camaïeu” technique as under-painting before glazing, which employs two or three tints of a single color, other than gray, to create a monochromatic image.

I use “Grisaille” technique, but I use burnt umber instead of black for my under-painting before glazing.

Note: "Grisaille" was originally used with black tempera by Flemish painters as an under-painting. Good example of technique with "Grisaille" is "Portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and his Wife” by Jan Van Eyck. “Adoration of the Magi” by Leonardo da Vinci is a good example of “Camaïeu”.
