The technique is known as “Grisaille” technique, because the paint in “Grisaille (monochrome painting by black and white or gray)” is used in the under-painting before glazing layers of color over it. Also, some artist use “Camaïeu” technique as under-painting before glazing, which employs two or three tints of a single color, other than gray, to create a monochromatic image. I use “Grisaille” technique, but I use burnt-umber and white oil paints instead of black and white tempera for my under-painting before applying color oil glazes. Note: "Grisaille" was originally used with black and white egg tempera by Flemish painters as an under-painting before they applying color oil glazes over it. Good example of technique with "Grisaille" is "Portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and his Wife” by Jan Van Eyck. “Adoration of the Magi” by Leonardo da Vinci is a good example of “Camaïeu”. |
