This is one of paintings from my “The Tale of Genji” series and I painted the boy as the younger Genji who is far advanced in areas such as playing instruments, composing poem, painting, dancing, and learning. It is not related to the story of "The Tale of Genji", but an image I developed. In this scene, the young Genji is playing a Japanese flute exceedingly well which attracts the legendary Phoenix. The Phoenix is drawn by the sweet sound of his flute and appears to listen attentively to the music. A sound does not have a shape, but the shape of the Phoenix and its expression indicate that his playing is outstanding.

Oh, this is absolutely beautiful! And it's traditional art too! In this day and age where many things are digital work, I admire any traditional artist.

I am currently reading the Tale of Genji, and have become helplessly addicted to it. Although this isn't a scene from the book, with Genji's talents, it's easily imaginable that he would be able to attract the Pheonix with his music. Overall, I love the mystical feel of this piece. ^^
